Majora's Mask

Get Item Manipulation

Get Item Manipulation is a memory manipulation glitch which allows you to receive the wrong item from an item drop. There are various methods to get Get Item Delay, which is the state in which you have collected an item drop which would give you a text box, but can move around freely. If you surface in water with Get Item Delay, you will receive the item you picked up. If you walk in front of a chest so that the A button says Open, or go near fish, bugs, spring water, or grabbable objects, you will receive a different item when you surface in water.

How it works

When an item drop, chest or NPC offers you an item, Link stores its Get Item ID. Picking the item up normally gives it to you and clears the ID. With Get Item Delay, Link can move around with the ID still stored and nothing clears it. Anything else that offers an item afterwards overwrites the stored ID. When you surface in water, the game gives you whatever item the stored ID points to.

The game never checks whether that ID is valid, which is why some objects give the wrong item:

  • Chests offer the negative of their Get Item ID, which the game normally flips back to positive when you open the chest. With Get Item Delay the flip never happens, so the game reads from before the start of the item table. Depending on the chest, this gives the Ocarina of Time, Light Arrows, the Hero's Bow or a junk item.
  • Catchable bottle items offer ID 186, one past the end of the table which equates to the Ocarina of Time.
  • Any other item offer (another item drop, a Heart Piece, an NPC giving you an item, etc) replaces the ID with that real item, and you receive it normally.

A chest only offers its item while you stand directly in front of it, facing it, so that the A button says "Open".
