Ocarina of Time

RBA Charts / Tables

Several different charts and systems have been used for presenting the results of Reverse Bottle Adventure (RBA). The charts largely present the same data in different ways, although some of them omit niche results, so it is largely up to your preference and which you find easiest to use:

  • For the most accessible, non-technical charts, use Zas's charts
  • For a full lookup table including almost every relevant B and ▶ item, use the RBA lookup table
  • For understanding the individual bits being set by each RBA, use the older binary charts by Finzenku
  • For the full list of all 256 ▶ item results, including item IDs only accessible with SRM, see the extended RBA table

Zas charts

Created by Zas

These charts are designed to show the full effects of almost every possible (non-SRM) RBA, by looking up the ▶ item and the B button item. For equipment, upgrades, dungeon items, and quest status, each individual cell shows the items that will be given, deleted (marked with a red X), and remain untouched (dimmed icon).

RBA lookup table

This single image provides a comprehensive reference for almost every useful RBA, including all of the Adult trade items and several miscellaneous ▶ items. Items given are shown in green, items deleted are shown in red, with some extra information on Bullet Bags and Strength at the bottom-left.

Each different B bottled item is a column, while each ▶ item is a row.

Binary charts

Created by Finzenku

Click here for a version with both charts in one image.

Many runners find these charts somewhat difficult to understand, because the RBA results are presented in terms of the bits being set and unset, which requires interpreting the B bottled items as numerical values represented in binary and, for upgrade RBA, it is further confused by the fact that each upgrade occupies 3 bits which can cross between different trade items (Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco, Cojiro).

Some runners, on the other hand, find it helpful to understand the underlying bits being set/unset, which is indeed truer to the way the RBA values are actually written to and interpreted by the game.

B and C items

  • The orange section shows what each bottled item's value is, in binary then decimal. When you catch that item on B, that 8-bit value gets written to the spot determined by the ▶ item
  • The Inventory section shows Item Slot RBA results: for example, oot hammer → oot nl means that with oot hammer Hammer on C-Right, the bottled item caught on B will go into the Nayru's Love inventory slot (overwriting NL if it is there)
  • The Ammo section shows items that, when on C-Right, change the corresponding ammo count (e.g. RBAing with Fairy on C-Right sets your Deku Stick count)
  • The Dungeon section shows the bits for Boss Key, Compass, and Dungeon Map, and the ▶—if the bit is 1, you will have the item, if the bit is 0 you will not have it
  • The Equipment / Quest Items section shows the Child and Adult Trade items (on C-Right) that correspond to various Equipment and Quest Status values, with colors denoting what each bit determines—if the bit is 1, you will have the item, if the bit is 0 you will not have it

RBA Quick 2

Upgrade RBA values

Each of the "upgrade" C-Right items (Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco, Cojiro), points to a byte (which has 8 bits) in memory. Each upgrade type (e.g. Nut Capacity, Scale, Bomb Bag), uses a 3-bit value to determine what upgrade the player currently has, except for Wallet which uses only 2 bits. Some of the 3-bit upgrades span multiple C-Right items, so for example both oot cucco Pocket Cucco and oot cojiro Cojiro affect the player's current strength upgrade.

To interpret this chart:

  • Each XXXX XXXX represents the 8 bits written to by that C-Right item
  • The 000 or 00 within each XXXX XXXX denotes which bits determine the current upgrade
  • The corresponding bits can be found in the B bottle values in the chart above to determine what upgrades each B item will give
  • The upgrade icons are what gets displayed on the pause menu (e.g. having Black Gauntlets causes a Silver Scale icon to show up in your strength slot), and the small numbers are the amount that upgrade actually "has" (e.g. the 101 Quiver, which shows up as a big bomb bag, actually holds 20 arrows)

Example: how do we get the Bomb Bag (holds 30) using RBA?

  1. Find the Bomb Bag upgrades on the top row—we see it uses oot cojiro Cojiro
  2. Bomb Bag uses bits XX00 0XXX, or the 3rd, 4th, and 5th bits from the left
  3. The Bomb Bag (holds 30) is the second one down, corresponding to binary value 010
  4. Look for a B item that has XX01 0XXX, meaning 010 in the bits that correspond to Bomb Bag
  5. The only B bottle that matches is oot bottle Empty Bottle
  6. Now we know that emptying the B bottle with oot cojiro Cojiro on C-Right is how we get the Bomb Bag (holds 30)

Extended RBA table

Table sourced from OoT SRM / GIM tables

This table contains all 256 item IDs in the game, and the corresponding slot or data they point to when equipped to ▶. This covers all the standard RBAs of item slots, amounts, dungeon items, upgrades, equipment, and quest status. It also covers RBA that is only possible by using SRM to equip strange items onto the C buttons—this mainly allows for editing dungeon flags and small key counts, but has a few other effects depending on the item.

Item 255 (0xFF) is the blank C-Button value.
