Ocarina of Time
Flame Storage
Discovered by Acryte
Flame storage is a glitch that allows you to interact with a torch then pull out a Deku Stick from a distance and have it remotely ignite. This is useful to light a stick using hard-to-reach torches or to carry the flame further than you normally could on the burning stick timer.
Explanation
Torches use a property of Link's actor called meleeWeaponInfo, which contains position data for Link's melee weapon(s), to determine whether his Deku Stick is "inside of" the torch's flame — if so, it will ignite the flame. This weapon info is not updated except when Link is using a melee weapon attack (sword, hammer, stick) or carrying a Deku Stick.
On the frame Link pulls a Deku Stick out (as in, the first frame the Stick is visible), the game does update the weapon info. However, it does this in Link's Draw functions, which occur after actor update functions are run, so the torch still checks the old weapon position. Therefore if the last position was close enough to a torch flame, and we later pull out a Deku Stick (while the torch actor is still loaded), the Deku Stick will ignite.
TL;DR for practical purposes note the following things: the torch actor must still be loaded when pulling the Deku Stick for it to light, and you can not update the melee weapon position before pulling the stick (i.e. you can not perform sword attacks).
Jumpslash method
- Jumpslash with your sword and have it hit the very top of a torch
- Pull out a Deku Stick
Putaway method
Have stick in hand either before or after setting up the position, it will work either way, all that matters is the stick's position when putting it away.
- Walk up on the right side of a torch
- Link must be positioned so that when he puts the Deku Stick away, it passes through the flame
- Pull out a stick to light it
- Put away the stick with A or by pulling a first-person item
- Pulling some other items moves the stick differently (down and to the right), which also works by the same mechanic but is just harder to use in most situations
