Entering Shadow Temple

Hookshot jump

This is a first person item lock hookshot jump. For any setup, press hookshot within a 4 frame window after bonking start the aiming loop. There's then a 2 frame window to press hookshot to get the jump.

using Dampe's hut

This is slower than using the fence when coming from Dampe's grave, but is listed first here because the video tutorial is helpful for either jump location.

using fence

This setup saves around 2s over using Dampe's hut. After beginning the jump, time holding up and jumpslashing to land on the out of bounds collision.

The first part of this video covers the hookshot jump like the videos above, but the second part goes over how to make it to the dungeon entrance after the hookshot jump and how to back up various mistakes.

from Nocturne

  1. Turn left
  2. Sidehop left
  3. 2x ESS right (facing angle 0xf1f1)
  4. Sidehop left twice
  5. Instant shield drop 3 bombs without targeting wall
  6. After the last bomb is fully out, retarget to target the wall
  7. Sidehop right three times
  8. Sidehop left once
  9. Backwalk or sidehop to load zone

Superslide Teleport Method

Superslide Teleport discovered by GuanoBowl, Bombchu Teleport to Shadow Temple Discovered by Runnerguy2489

In order to teleport, you cannot have any of the strength upgrades in your equipment screen. Otherwise when Link grabs the bush, he will just pick it up.

This trick is easiest with a bombchu, but it can be done with bombs as well using a different setup.

As adult, the most commonly used setup for this currently is composed of using the hookshot to shorten the backflip to ensure perfect positioning easily. It can be seen below.

Play: YouTube video

As child, a different setup is needed.

  1. With ISG, and your sword sheathed, align with the vertical line on the fence
  2. Backflip and in C up mode align the B Button as shown
  3. Sidehop twice to get closer to the correct position and destroy some of the grass, ensuring that you leave the bushes to your right and the one closest to the wall in front of you (The chu will explode when it hits the one in front, and the superslide will be activated off grabbing the bush to your right)
  4. Stand just within "Grab" range of the bush in front of you and pull out a bombchu
  5. Hold about 50% of the way back on the control stick so that link is walking backwards
  6. After walking a couple of steps backwards, press and hold R, followed very quickly by mashing A whilst always holding down slightly. Link will drop the bombchu and sideroll to the right
  7. Once you have the superslide, release and repress Z Target so you can see the bushes - this prevents them from unloading
  8. When you are at the top of the grave, release everything and you will be teleported above the bush you tried to grab. Turn 180 degrees and backflip onto the seam

The same set up is usable for Adult Link, except 1 distance bombchu hover is required before you backflip onto the seam depending on the method.

Hovering Method

Discovered by fluffy_kitten

This method is commonly used when one has a strength upgrade or no bombchus.

  1. Get on Dampe's hut.
  2. Activate ISG
  3. Bomb hover up to the green ledge.

It might be a little difficult because you won't be able to see the bomb, but with practice it's easy. It's recommended that you face the wall at an angle so that link is facing a bit more towards the back of the graveyard than being perfectly perpendicular to the wall. This way you should get on the ledge in 3-4 bombs rather than 5 if you are perpendicular to the wall.

Megaflip over long gaps

It is possible even without the hookshot or hover boots to get past the first gap in shadow temple and also the gap where you raise the bars after the truth spinner. This can be done as both child and adult link with a simple megaflip. Note that for the first gap, if you are doing a chu megaflip using pause buffering, you must be standing right at the edge for it to clear the gap.

Dead Hand strategies

Dead Hand's spawn point is random. Unfortunately, it's possible for it to spawn out of bounds, and this means there's no way to fight it.

As child, jumpslash a hand and then back away to avoid getting grabbed. Crouch stab the head twice (jumpslash damage is stored). As Dead Hand walks away, time a jumpslash using a cue with its left arm as shown in the video, then time one more jumpslash the same way to finish the fight.

As adult, not much changes. Instead of crouch stabbing the head twice, crouch stab and then slash. Then you'll only need one jumpslash as Dead Hand walks away to finish the fight.

Entering first person before the cutscene of the chest spawning and door opening can save frames.

Truth Spinner explanation

In most speedruns, a player will either not have the lens of truth or magic, so the truth spinner must be done by guessing. There are 5 positions you can set the spinner, but it will always be one of the back 3, never the ones on the edges; going counterclockwise from the truth spinner's starting position, the chance of each position being the correct one are 0, 4/9, 2/9, 3/9, 0. It is also important that you do not fall in the pit if you are wrong, as this resets the room. You can either have ISG activated or have the Hover Boots on and start rolling away if the pit opens up. A few well-timed sidehops could get you away from the pit before it opens up too, but this is not recommended.

Truth Spinner Skip

Found by MrGrunz as child & Skater as adult

You can also do a megaflip through the gate, allowing you to skip pushing the Truth spinner. Some of the setups will be slightly faster than others, but it will often depend on the items required and from where you are coming. For the most part you can pick from any that match your situation.

Click each setup below to expand.

Backflip backroll (bomb/chu)

This strat is viable to do unbuffered with bomb or chu.

Notes for using bombchu in this strat: pull the bombchu after the final backflip, then drop + roll on 9th red or 9th black.

Swordless (non-initial)

This setup is less ideal than others if using bomb, because it drops the bomb during the backflip. 3rd backflip frame is the ideal frame to drop the bomb. 2nd or 4th frame also work, but the roll has to be respectively later or earlier than usual.

You can slightly modify the setup to get a standardized bomb placement. Instead of turning left and then backflipping: turn right, dry roll, turn 180 and dry roll again, then backflip.

Play: YouTube video
Sword (non-initial)

Like the previous strat, this one works best with a bombchu rather than a bomb, because the bomb has to be dropped during the backflip at proper timing.

Sidehop sideroll (bomb/chu)

This strat is viable to do unbuffered with bomb or chu.

Some of the videos don't demonstrate the strat with a bombchu. To do these with bombchu, don't pull the chu until the final sidehop right, then shield drop and roll on 8th red or 8th black flash. If you pause on 7th black flash, you can drop the chu for 1 frame then roll on the next frame (8th red). Megaflip on the normal neutral megaflip frame (Link leans back).

Anti-gravity after truth spinner

You can megaflip when Link is around the top of the sloped ramp down to B2 (not on the flat ground) to get antigrav and fall all the way to the beamos. This allows you to pull a bomb very early to break the bombable wall after landing.

Note that this deals 0.5 hearts of fall damage.

Boat Skip & Boatkey Skip

Triple Slash Clip (TSC)

This method is slower than the methods with bombs, but very few routes have bombs at this point in the run making this the most common method of boat skip. The video goes over a position setup from the chest and a backup.

Play: YouTube video

Slower setup - the TSC part of this setup is not recommended, but the out of bounds hover boots part, while slower than the video above, may be easier.

Hoverbootless

This still requires beating Dead Hand, so it is useful for runs that cannot get hover boots (such as low%).

Boatkey skip

These tricks are similar to boat skip but also end up in the loading zone for Bongo Bongo, making them much faster. However, they do require bombs.

Floors B3 and B4

Right before entering the large main room, Navi will try to warn you about the Wallmasters. Simply store a ground jump and walk past to avoid it, or use a HESS.

Main Room Hoverslide

If you angle a HESS or superslide correctly from the main room, then equip the hover boots, you can hoverslide over to where the room with the Gold Skulltula, Like-Like, keese, and invisible scythe are. The HESS saves about 10 seconds over going through the falling blades and around on a few invisible platforms.

Play: YouTube video

Like-Like Clip for Gold Skulltula

In the room with the Gold Skulltula, Like-Like, keese, and invisible scythe, normally you must defeat all the enemies in the room to open the bars in the back for the Gold Skulltula. By manipulating the like-like against the gate, it is possible to perform a hookshot clip to get through. Once inside, you can simply walk out through the gate because only one side is solid.

Beamos silver rupee gate skip

  1. Target the wall and position Link so the tip of his hat is right-of-center in the gap between the wall and the left edge of the gate (precise but not very precise)
  2. Sidehop left and right
  3. Long roll (can do untargeted; if staying targeted, shield flick first to avoid sideroll)
Play: YouTube video

Falling Spike Clip

In the room with two falling spikes, you are typically supposed to move the large block across the room to not get crushed. However, with a well-timed jumpslash, backflip, sidehop, or damage from the razor, it is possible to clip on top of the spikes. If you are in the air and under the spikes (specifically around the edges of the spikes where the object above is thinner), you will not get crushed but pushed through to the top, allowing for easy access to the switch and then the key. The easiest way to do this is to backflip against the wall.

Boat Room Gate Clip

This video shows how to get up to the gold skulltula, but if you just want to get to the boat or the floor below, just jumpslash again after clipping in step 5. There is also a tutorial on just the gate clip part.

  1. Target the wall in the corner; when jumping down from above, hold up to autoroll and target midroll, and ideally pull sword right before landing to put it in Link's hand
  2. Sidehop left three times
  3. Neutral target slash and interrupt with shield twice
  4. Neutral target slash uninterrupted
  5. Jumpslash to clip (hold shield if you want to stay clipped in, e.g. for the Skulltula)

From clipping you can jumpslash again to exit the cage down to the lower floor. To get the Gold Skulltula above:

  1. Sidehop left twice
  2. 1x ESS right (facing angle 0x38f8)
  3. C-up/first person item
  4. Exit first person, then 2 to 19 frames later start holding left
    • Enormous window, just don't cancel first person then press Left at the same time
    • If you hold straight left, you can never fall down by failing this, no matter your timing
  5. Keep holding full left to jump and grab the upper ledge from behind, climb up
  6. Put on hover boots before Link finishes climbing
    • Should be done after Link grabs the ledge but before he falls after climbing up it
  7. Hold towards the ledge to jump onto it
Play: YouTube video

Wheel jump

In order to get up to the boat, you normally would push the block over, climb up it and then climb the ladder to the top. You could additionally just hookshot the top of the ladder. The fastest method, however, is a precise jump off the edge towards the wheel. If done correctly you can pop right on top of the boat's wheel, and then just sidehop to the middle of the boat. This is demonstrated at the end of the above video.

Boss Key without Din's Fire

Discovered by AKA

In the boss key room, there are two spike walls which slowly close in on Link that normally must be burned using Din's Fire. Instead, when you enter the room, immediately run over to the wall on the right and slash your sword at it, using the video as guidance for where on the wall to hit. This will activate the Redead behind the wall. Stay as close to the wall as possible (this will require taking damage) and soon the Redead should freeze you, allowing the walls to pass through you. When you're free, just kill the Redead and get the boss key. To escape, either wait until the walls come together (which causes the game to think you were crushed), or use Farore's Wind to warp out.

Clear the large gap without arrows

After riding the boat, there is a large gap you normally need to cross before you can head to the boss. This is supposed to be done by shooting arrows into the bomb flowers to blow up a statue, creating a bridge. There are three other methods that can be used:

Hoverslide

Simply set up a superslide and then equip the hover boots to slide fully across the gap without having to jumpslash at the end.

Play: YouTube video

If you don't have bombs or don't want to use two bombs, you can do a megaflip or megasidehop, and equip hoverboots before landing to hoverslide across. Start holding down in the air (untarget) and jumpslash just after the hover boots run out.

The video shows a particular chu setup off the broken piece of the pillar, but you can line up a megasidehop/megaflip in any way you want.

Blue Warp Cutscene Skip

This cutscene skip also allows you to obtain the Shadow Medallion as a Child, since the crashes related to getting Medallions as a Child are due to the child entrance records being malformed.

Many setups to perform the "ocarina items" glitch on the blue work exist. Some are dependent on the position of Bongo when he dies, and others are not.

In general, initial position setups rely on positioning Bongo Bongo along a seam prior to the finishing blow. This is achieved by moving onto one of the seams while Bongo Bongo is playing the drum. In many cases you will not have a fish, therefore using the Infinite Sword Glitch you can have a bottle in hand, ready to Ocarina Items as soon as Bongo's death cutscene is finished.

After performing the "ocarina items" glitch a direction is held, and some delay is used up until the point where link hits the ground. Link should be far enough away that the warp is unloaded, and upon death as the camera turns the timing is correct and the cutscene is skipped. Some setups are shown below.

Play: YouTube video

Critical health

Because of changes in the camera, critical health needs a different setup, and runs will almost always be on critical health here making this one the important one to know.

  1. During the fight, get ISG and catch something to put a bottle in Link's hands
  2. After Bongo Bongo dies, ESS turn or shield turn down
  3. Sidehop left x2
  4. Backflip x3 with bottle OI on the third backflip
  5. Once the camera settles, hold up and press B to cancel OI; continue holding up through the remainder of the trick
  6. Slash twice on the way to the edge of the platform; Link should get to full speed between slashes
  7. Release the control stick to neutral once Link starts falling

It is also possible with Ledge Cancel and Sun's Song to skip the Shadow Medallion Cutscene. This is very convenient in 100% because you need to get the Heart Container.
