A Link to the Past
Bottle
A bottle is a Y-item that allows Link to store potions, fairies, or bees. There are four of them in the game.
Locations
There are four bottles:
- tavern bottle
- merchant bottle
- hobo bottle
- purple chest bottle
Tavern bottle
The tavern bottle is found in a chest at the top section of the tavern in Kakariko Village. To access the area of the tavern containing the chest, the player needs to use the tavern's secret back entrance.
Merchant bottle
West of the weathervane in Kakariko is a merchant who will sell Link a bottle in exchange for 100 rupees.
In the rain state, the merchant can be found in Village of Outcasts instead of Kakariko. He'll still sell Link the bottle for 100 rupees.
Hobo bottle
A hobo is camping under the stone bridge. If Link visits and talks to him, he will give Link a bottle for free.
To reach the hobo, you're expected to have the flippers to swim in the deep water that leads under the bridge. It's possible to reach him without flippers through using the fake flippers glitch. The hobo bottle is unobtainable in the rain state. This is because sprites normally found on the Light World are in the Dark World instead, but there's no hobo screen in the Dark World where you could visit and talk to the hobo.
Purple chest bottle
After the lost Smith has been rescued, a purple chest will appear in the Dark World in the dilapidated house on the peg field screen (the house corresponding to where the smithery is in the Light World). If Link touches the purple chest, he will acquire it as a follower. If he brings it to the locksmith (otherwise known as the average middle-aged man) on the Desert pass screen, the locksmith will open it and Link will be rewarded with the bottle inside.
Some notes about having the purple chest as a follower:
- You can jump ledges with the chest.
- You can use the hookshot to pull Link and the purple chest will follow.
- With only a couple of exceptions, you cannot dash with the purple chest. If you try to dash, Link will leave the purple chest behind.
- Immediately after hopping a ledge, using the hookshot to drag Link, or taking damage, you can dash and the purple chest will follow.
- You can flute with the purple chest.
- With the exception of falling to the underworld (i.e. the well in Kakariko Village or the pit to the magic bat cave), you cannot take the purple chest to the underworld with you.
- Touching the purple chest, even if it's dropped later, will make the game consider it your follower. This has a few consequences, most notably not being able to acquire another follower (such as the false maiden in Thieves' Town or Kiki). To resolve this, the player must either save and quit to reset the chest or have the locksmith open it.
Description
The bottles can be used as a container to store other items: a fairy, a potion (red, green, and blue varieties), and bees (including the good bee). Bottling a fairy or a bee also requires the bug catching net.
In speedruns, bottles have a few uses:
- Yuzuhara's bottle adventure (or YBA), a glitch that involves drinking a potion at the same time a screen transition is used.
- Stairmaster, a glitch that uses a potion to allow Link to take a spiral stairwell diagonally.
- Activating superspeed using spiral stairwells.
- Bottles can be a useful safety for more novice runners. When combined with the bug net, players can bottle fairies that can help with surviving the more challenging sections of a run.
