A Link to the Past

Yuzuhara's Bottle Adventure

Yuzuhara's Bottle Adventure or YBA is a glitch that works by drinking a bottled potion on the same frame that Link touches a screen transition. The glitch can have several different effects depending on context.

The community treats the glitch differently depending on if it's used on the overworld or the underworld. Underworld YBAs are more powerful and can create more broken effects.

Execution

First the player needs to have a bottle with a red, blue, or green potion in it. The potions can all have different effects depending on the exact context of the trick, so which potion the player has is typically very important. The player also needs to be missing some amount of the resource that the potion replenishes, or else Link won't drink the potion. For example, red potions fill hearts, so in order for Link to use them, he can't have full health.

When the player is ready to do the trick, they must position Link one frame's worth of movement from the transition they want to YBA on. This will be within 2 pixels of the transition if moving onto a north or west transition and 1 pixel if moving onto a south or east one (see: movement to make sense of why). After getting Link positioned properly, the player presses the d-pad toward the transition and Y on the same frame with their bottled potion equipped.

Overworld YBAs

Overworld YBAs result from using a YBA on an overworld screen transition. This can have three different effects depending on the potion used:

  • With a red potion, the Desert tablet prayer effect will happen.
  • With a green potion, the effect of a blue potion (magic and hearts refilled) will happen.
  • With a blue potion, a fake flute will be activated.

With red and green potions, some of the transition code will run, but Link will not be dragged to the next screen. This tends to result in buggy collision, camera, and transition behaviors, which may be used to players' benefits. A practical example can be seen with YBA frog rescue.

Overworld fake flute

If the player uses a blue potion on the same frame as an overworld transition, they'll get a fake flute. This happens because of the typical game mode conflicts that are common to many transition glitches.

This glitch gives the player access to the flute menu even if they haven't collected and activated the flute yet. And even more interestingly, this glitch will pull up the flute menu even if Link is in the Dark World, which normally can't happen.

If Link uses a Light World fake flute, the flute will function almost identically to when the flute is used normally. With a Dark World fake flute, the game will give the player the usual 8 options, and when selected, the bird will drop Link off on the Light World screen corresponding to their chosen destination. But Link never actually warped to the Light World, so the game will be in a state we call fake Light World.

Underworld YBAs

YBAs can have different effects on the underworld depending on the type of transition they're used on.

Subtile YBAs

On a subtile door, the different potions will have the following effects:

  • A red potion will activate the Desert tablet prayer effect.
  • A green potion will act as a normal blue potion (refilling Link's hearts and magic).
  • A blue potion will activate a fake flute.

Underworld fake flutes will be expanded on below. Red and green YBAs on east, west, or south subtile doors will activate a door juke where Link can get beyond the subtile transition.

On a north door, the game will update Link's quadrant as if he's moved into the quadrant above within the supertile, but he hasn't physically been dragged to that quadrant. A big consequence of this is that if the player follows up the YBA by walking into the north subtile transition the YBA was used on, it will behave as if Link is using the north supertile transition for the room he's in. This can be an impactful glitch in places where a supertile lacks a north door for activating a transition upwards.

Spin subtile YBA

Supertile YBAs

On a supertile transition, the different potions will have the following effects:

  • A red potion will activate an unused effect.
  • A green potion will activate a fake flute.
  • A blue potion will open the save-and-quit menu.

Using red or blue potions on supertile doors will also spoof data to the supertile in the direction of the transition.

Spin supertile YBA

Spin supertile YBAs will activate [overlay corruption]

Underworld fake flute

Doing a YBA with a blue potion on a subtile door or a green potion on a supertile door will result in a fake flute. The game never intends that the player warp with the flute while indoors, and this creates very broken effects.

When activated, the game gives the player the usual prompt for a destination to have the bird fly Link to. After the player makes their selection, the bird will appear to fly Link to that screen on the Light World, but the screen will have corrupted data and tilemap properties. If the player accesses a transition, the underworld will load in a state we call Plaid World.

Naming

The glitch owes its name to two things:

  1. Legendary TASer, glitch hunter, and runner Yuzuhara, who found the trick in April 2014.
  2. Bottle Adventure and Reverse Bottle Adventure—two well-known Ocarina of Time glitches that also involve using bottles.
