A Link to the Past
Ancilla Overload
Ancilla overload is a glitch where new ancillae spawns will be prevented. This is considered a minor glitch.
For understanding this glitch, it's recommended to read through the page on ancillae mechanics. This way, you can understand the vocabulary this page will use.
Execution
Ancilla overload is generally executed in one of two ways:
- Fill slots 0-4 with non-particle ancillae. When trying to load a new ancilla, the search index will fail to find a particle ancilla to replace and the new ancilla won't spawn. It's important that the search index is less than or equal to 5, or else the new ancilla may be misslotted.
- Fill slots 0-4 with a mix of particle and non-particle ancillae, but make sure the search index is set to a value where its search will miss the particle ancillae. This will also prevent new ancilla from loading in.
Heart despawn glitch
This is a method to despawn heart containers that appear after boss kills. Because heart containers count as completion towards Link's inventory, skipping them can be important in Low% speedruns.
This works by filling up ancillae slots in clever ways that only despawn the heart container but not the following pendant/crystal (else you would softlock on most bosses where doors are closed and menus disabled).
Splashless fake flippers
Ancilla overload allows for one method of performing the fake flippers glitch. The splash that happens when Link jumps into deep water is an ancilla (ID: 0x15), and the check for flippers occurs as part of the splash ancilla's subroutine. This means if there's no splash, there's no check for flippers, and Link will be able to swim. And of course, this is very doable with ancilla overload.
