A Link to the Past
Hookshot
The hookshot is a Y-item in the game. It's a multi-use item that can be a weapon against enemies or a tool used to fetch drops or latch onto objects and have Link pulled towards them.
Location
The hookshot is found in the big chest in Swamp Palace.
Description
When used, the hookshot extends a chain outwards from Link. It has four main "intended" uses:
- It can fetch drops (small keys, arrows, bombs, magic, rupees, etc.) similar to the boomerang.
- It can be directly used as a weapon, and in another similarity with the boomerang, it frequently applies stun damage to enemies.
- It can be used to latch onto certain objects in the game. When the hookshot latches onto something, it will drag Link to the object as the chain retracts. This can be used to cross gaps Link normally wouldn't be able to, and it can also be used as another movement option.
- It's used to pull the Arrghi (the puffs surrounding Arrghus) away from Arrghus so they can be attacked. This is normally a requirement for defeating Arrghus.
The hookshot will latch itself onto many of the interactable objects in the game. It also tends to latch onto things that are made of wood materials. A non-exhaustive list includes:
- Bushes
- Chests
- Crystal switch pegs that are raised
- Hammer pegs
- Liftable rocks, boulders, and blocks
- The posts on either side of the broken bridge at the bottom of East Death Mountain
- Pots (both the Light World clay pots and the Dark World skull pots)
- Push blocks, even the kind that can't actually be pushed
- Signs
- Statues, but only ones that cannot be pushed/pulled
- Telepathy tiles
- Thick rails
- Torches—both the kind that Link can light and the tall ones
- Trees
- Warp pots
- Wooden fences

Main article: Superspeed
An item dash with the hookshot will arm superspeed. It's also used in sword climbing and 0 cycle Arrghus.
Hookpushing
Main article: Misslotting
Using misslotting, the player can manipulate how the hookshot drags Link after it latches onto an object. This can be used to go through walls or other solid collision.
