A Link to the Past
Door State Extension
Door state extension is a glitch that lets Link physically leave a doorway while the game's physics and collision checks behave as if he's still inside the doorway. This can allow Link to walk through obstacles near the door it's performed on.
When done to clip through obstacles, this is considered a major glitch.
Applications
Icebreaker
This is a trick that allows the player to skip past the wall that divides the room containing the big key chest in Ice Palace. This offers a faster route through Ice Palace compared to the usual Ice Palace bomb jump route. Performing it requires the cane of somaria, and the speedrun community classifies it as a major glitch.
To perform the trick:
- Hold coming into the room until Link walks into the wall directly outside the doorway.
- Move 2 pixels to the left, which will be done with one frame of . This is commonly done using a sword or pause buffer to the left (see: buffering). If you still need to equip the cane, you'll get one pause buffer for free. Note that a dash buffer won't work because will grab the wall.
- Begin holding
. This must be a clean diagonal (no
before or vice versa). Because of this, players often buffer this input with a slash. You can hold this input as long as you want. You should see that Link has clipped one pixel into the wall. Link's X-position should be
1F29. - Place a somaria block, and during the cane animation, stop holding the d-pad and go neutral.
- Move one frame to the left. This can again be done using a buffer of your choice, except for dash buffering as will lift the block instead of charge a dash.
- Hold or and Link will walk through the barrier. Continue holding it until Link reaches the other side.
