A Link to the Past
Lift Upgrade
A lift upgrade refers to one of two items that increases Link's lift strength: the power glove and the titan's mitt, frequently shortened to gloves and mitts respectively.
Both of these are equipment items that allow Link to pick up different rocks in the game.
Location
The power glove is located in the big chest in Desert Palace.
The titan's mitt is located in the big chest in Thieves' Town. The thieves' big chest is surrounded by hammer pegs, meaning the player needs the hammer in order to access the chest. This is true even when the player is using major glitches.
Description
If the player has the gloves, they'll be able to lift the light colored rocks and boulders that appear on the overworld. They'll also be able to lift the big blocks that appear in some dungeons, such as the one blocking the pit that falls to the Kholdstare boss in Ice Palace.
If the player has the mitts, they'll also be able to lift dark colored rocks and boulders on the overworld.
Both lift upgrades are required for beating the game without major glitches. The gloves are needed to access the 2nd half of Desert Palace and subsequently, Death Mountain. The mitts are needed to access the Desert, Lake Hylia, and TR portals, which are all gated by dark rocks and are the only access to Misery Mire, Ice Palace, and Turtle Rock, respectively.
With the use of major glitches, the player may not need any of the lift upgrades depending on the exact restrictions and the goals of the route. If the player gets the mitts without having gotten the gloves, they'll still be rewarded with the mitts, which have all the capabilities of the gloves plus more. This is an effective way to skip the power glove and is common in major glitch routes that need at least 1 lift upgrade. If the player gets the mitts and then gets the gloves, their lift upgrade will be downgraded, and they'll effectively lose their mitts with no way to get them back.
