A Link to the Past

Transition Glitches

Transition glitches are a large class of major glitches that all involve bypassing or corrupting a screen or room transition. Generally speaking, major glitch categories impose rules on overworld transition glitches separately from underworld transition glitches. For example, in the RMG ruleset, mirror corruptions are allowed on the overworld, but they're not allowed on the underworld.

Anywhere

Yuzuhara's Bottle Adventure

A YBA involves using a bottle filled with a potion on the same frame as activating a transition. It can have several different effects depending on the type of screen transition as well as the type of potion.

Death Hole

Main article: Death hole

A glitch that arises when Link falls into a pit and activates the transition on the same frame that he dies.

Quadrant Glitch

Main article: Quadrant glitch

Causing a desync between Link's actual position and where the game thinks he is in a way that corrupts future transitions.

Overworld only

Screen wrap

Main article: Screen wrap

Using a teleport or an out-of-bounds ledge hop to move Link beyond a screen transition trigger.

Map wrap

Main article: Map wrap

Hitting a transition at the edge of the overworld.

Mirror wrap

Using the mirror on the same frame as a transition, which will cause a screen wrap.

Underworld only

These are often known by the door glitch moniker since the primary mode of transitioning on the underworld is using a door.

Door juke

Main article: Door juke

A glitch that allows Link to bypass subtile door transitions.

Somaria transition corruption

Main article: Somaria transition corruption

A class of glitches performed by pushing a somaria block on a door transition. This includes several subclasses:

  • Somaria YBA
  • Spin somaria
  • Medallion somaria

Mirror door

Main article: Mirror door

Using the mirror on the same frame as a transition.

Jingle glitch

Main article: Jingle glitch

A usually accidental glitch caused by using stairs just as a shutter door opens or closes.

Common consequences

All transition glitches behave uniquely, but there are common consequences shared between some of them.

Data spoof

Main article: Data spoofing

Many door glitches can spoof data between rooms. This may cause unintended behavior such as chests changing contents, doors unlocking/relocking, or pit flags changing. The latter is one method of wrong warping.

Position offsets

Transition glitches can result in Link's supertile position being offset, such that when he next transitions, he may move to a tile not adjacent to where he currently is. Position offsets can also change the location of sprites, making it appear as if no sprites are spawned. They are, in fact, spawned—they are off screen and may be briefly visible during transitions. But in this state, they can't be interacted with, which can be advantageous or detrimental depending on the situation.

When the camera is offset, Link will appear to be in one room but with the collision of another.

Door behavior changes

Door glitches can change the behavior of super- and subtile doors, causing them to behave like the opposite; i.e. subtile transitions act like supertiles and vice versa.

Game mode changes

A handful of door glitches execute different scripts as a result of game mode corruption, usually with visible results.
