A Link to the Past

Fake Items

minor glitch

Fake items is a glitch that lets Link use an item by equipping it. Its name comes from its most powerful application where the player can use magic powder while only having the mushroom in their inventory. This is known as fake powder.

Fake items is classified as a minor glitch

Fake-able items

There are four items that can be used with this glitch:

  • Magic powder (doesn't require magic)
  • Mushroom (gives the powder effect and doesn't require magic)
  • Mirror
  • Bow (requires an arrow)

The latter two items are basically useless as if the player wants to use them, they can just equip them and press Y normally. But the magic powder and mushroom applications can be powerful, allowing the player to use the magic powder in a situation where they wouldn't normally be able to.

Methods

There are two methods for doing the trick:

  1. Using somaria without having enough magic
  2. Ledgepogging, or item dashing off of certain ledge hops using certain items

Somaria

This method requires somaria and less MP than the MP cost of placing a somaria block (8 MP with normal magic bar, and 4 MP with the 1/2 magic upgrade). With those two requirements met:

  1. Press Y with somaria equipped.
  2. The game will give a textbox telling you that you don't have enough magic for the action you're taking. Press any input you like to clear the text.
  3. Quickly press Start to open the item menu. You have a 12 frame window to open the menu after canceling the "not enough magic" text.
  4. Equip one of the fake-able items.
  5. Press Start again to shut the menu.

If everything is done correctly, Link will automatically use the new item out of the menu.

Ledgepogging

Ledgepogging triggers a fake item by item dashing (with certain items) off of certain ledges.

Ledges that work:

  • All ledges in the underworld
  • North ledges on the overworld

Any item that has a nonzero item dash animation length will work for ledgepogging. The complete list of items that work:

  • Boomerangs
  • Bow
  • Bug net
  • Byrna
  • Fire rod
  • Hammer
  • Ice rod
  • Magic powder
  • Shovel
  • Somaria

With a working ledge and a working item, the player needs to:

  1. Do an item dash towards the ledge and let Link hop it.
  2. Sometime after starting the item dash and before landing from the ledge hop, equip one of the fake-able items.

If done correctly, Link will automatically use the fake-able item after landing from the ledge hop.

Storing a fake item

Instead of equipping a fake-able item, the player can equip certain other items that "store" the fake item state. The player can then activate the fake item by later equipping a fake-able item.

The items that work for storing fake items are:

  • Bombs
  • Book
  • Bottles
  • Cape
  • Hookshot
  • Lamp
  • Medallions

A non-exhaustive list of things that will break a stored fake item include:

  • Using an item (even one of the above storage items)
  • Equipping any item that doesn't store the state
  • Kicking up boots dust
  • Lifting an object such as a bush or pot
  • Underworld/Overworld transitions
  • Falling into a pit

Fake powder

Fake items is most notable for enabling fake powder. This is where the player uses fake items with the mushroom, which will give the effect of using powder despite the player not having powder in their inventory.

Fake powder can be used exactly like normal powder. It will deal "powder damage" to enemies, and it will summon the magic bat if used at his alter. The latter can be significant to routing categories that need the half magic upgrade, as it may be costly to visit the witch before the magic bat.

An additional effect of fake powder is that Link is able to move during the powder dusting animation. Link also moves at 2 pixels per frame cardinally while fake powdering, which is faster than his usual 1.5 pixel per frame speed.
