A Link to the Past

Bunny Glitches

While Link is in his bunny form, there are several glitches that can be used to regain control of Link without having the Moon Pearl.

All of these glitches are classified as minor glitches in isolation. However, certain methods of activating and using bunny glitches require using one or more major glitches, and for the most part, even getting bunny Link into useful areas of the game requires using major glitches.

Bunny Link has several limitations that disempower him in comparison to normal human Link.

  • He cannot use his sword.
  • He cannot use any Y-items except bottles, mirror, and the Book of Mudora.
  • He cannot use the Pegasus boots.
  • He cannot lift or throw objects.
  • He cannot interact with rupee pulls or pull levers.
  • He cannot open chests.
  • He cannot swim in deep water.

The bunny glitches are generally going to be centered around reducing or even eliminating these limitations.

Lonk

Lonk is a state where the player appears to be human Link, but parts of the game's programming are thinking of him as being in his bunny state. The state is named for how wonky Link's walk animation appears when active.

A key facet of this is that Lonk has a few of the usual restrictions that bunny Link has. He cannot do the following actions:

  • use sword
  • dash
  • lift or throw objects
  • do pull actions for rupee pulls or pull-able levers
  • open chests

Lonk can use Y-items. He's also allowed to move while using most Y-items, even if the item would normally have an animation when Link uses it.

Some ways Lonk can be activated:

  • Getting damaged into an underworld entrance while Link doesn't have the Moon Pearl and the BG1 scroll is nonzero. In practice, this means the underworld entrance being loaded must be in the middle of the room.
  • Using the tubes in Turtle Rock while normal bunny Link.

Lonk can be deactivated by:

  • Jumping a ledge
  • Using a transition from the underworld to the overworld
  • Taking damage
  • Going into deep water, whether Link has the flippers or not
  • Using an item that will change Link's state (hookshot or any of the medallions)

Technical details

Lonk emerges from a conflict in two addresses that track Link's bunny state. One is address $5D, which is Link's general state handler. The other is $02E0, which is a graphics flag. Usually these will both agree, but with Lonk, $02E0 flags Link as being in his human form, and $5D will take a value indicating that Link is a bunny.

Speedrun applications

There are a couple prominent applications of Lonk in current speedruns.

RMG Hyrule Castle escape

In most RMG categories, the fastest route in the early game involves using Lonk. This is because the player wants to use overworld EG to walk by one of the gold guards standing on Hyrule Castle's ramparts in the rain state.

The only damage source that can be used to activate overworld EG on the castle ramparts is the barrier to Castle Tower, but the barrier doesn't apply the traditional damage recoil to default human-form Link. Instead it electrocutes him, and that doesn't trigger the EG mechanics. A way around this is to run into the barrier as Lonk. The game won't enter the electrocution state and will instead apply usual damage knockback to Link, which will activate the overworld EG and allow the player to proceed.

Super bunny

Super bunny is a state where the player is not completely Link but has gained most of his abilities. Super bunny can use sword, dash, lift and throw objects, use rupee pulls and levers, and open chests. The super bunny can still only use the Y-items that the normal bunny can though. While super bunny can charge and use a spin attack, it will have no hitbox and cannot damage enemies. It can still be used to spin dash and arm superspeed.

The super bunny will have a sped up walk animation compared to the normal bunny. This has no real effect on the gameplay, but it can be something the player uses to know that they have super bunny without wasting time checking for it with sword slashes or some other action.

Super bunny state is lost if the player takes damage, bonks, or transitions between the overworld and the underworld. There are a few ways to gain the super bunny state.

Fall into a pit

If the player falls through a pit transition (e.g. there's a floor below the pit), Link will be super bunny on the new floor. An example of this would be entering Skull Woods as bunny and falling into one of its entrances. Link will be super bunny inside the dungeon.

Dark World fake flute

If a fake flute is used in the Dark World as bunny Link, the player will land in fake Light World as the super bunny.

Item-get animation

If the bunny can pick up an item that gives an "item-get" animation, then Link will gain super bunny.

This can be done by talking to certain NPCs that give Link an item, such as the Fluteboy or the Bottle Merchant. The player can also pick up a piece of heart to activate the glitch but only if the collected heart piece completes a new heart container.

NPCs that don't give Link anything will have no effect on his bunny state.

Mirror transitions to underworld

By using the mirror on the same frame bunny Link enters a house or cave, the player will become super bunny inside. This is usually executed by positioning Link 1 or 2 pixels from an underworld entrance, and then pressing and Y on the same frame.

Getting recoiled into the underworld

By getting recoiled, typically from some type of damage source, and entering a house or cave at the same time, the player will have super bunny inside. An enemy doesn't necessarily need to deal actual damage Link to be used for this. A good example are the thief enemies in Village of Outcasts, who don't lower Link's health but do apply damage-like recoil to him, meaning they can be used to activate this glitch.

While not true for all enemies and all entrances, typically, enemies will push Link into the transition themselves due to how they apply recoil to Link when damaging him.

Surfing bunny

If Link is a bunny and the player does a screen transition while over deep water while having the flippers, they will enter a state called surfing bunny.

There are also a few ways to get normal Link in the Dark World without the Moon Pearl. In this state, you will be able to do everything Link normally can, however, if the player enters the underworld (or is already in the underworld when the glitch is activated) and exits back to the overworld, Link will be a normal bunny again. An exception exists if the player exits to the fake Dark World, where the player will retain control of Link and can freely use all entrances to the underworld on the screen. But if the screen is transitioned on the overworld, the Light World will be loaded.

There are a few ways to trigger this glitch.

Dungeon bunny revival

Dying in a Dark World dungeon as bunny Link will make Link respawn at the entrance as normal Link. If this is done prior to defeating Agahnim1, the game will also be in fake Dark World. If done after, it will remain in Dark World.

Zombie revival

Zombie revival (also sometimes called 0hp revival) is a specialized case of dungeon bunny revival that's most notable for allowing a revive to Link state in Swamp Palace.

Bunny link can't swim in Swamp's entrance room, and there are no nearby sources of damage. A solution to this is to do an overworld death hole to get Link into a zombie state. From there, the player can enter Swamp Palace and jump into the deep water, which will trigger their stored death. And because Link has died in a dungeon, he'll respawn as human Link.

Lonk deactivation

If the player can get Lonk state, they can use some of its deactivation methods to get full Link state. One prominent example of this is entering Turtle Rock as bunny Link and finding a way to access the tubes. These will give Lonk state, and the player can then find a source of damage. The damage will deactivate Lonk and give the player a full Link state.

There are a couple of ways to recover a full Link state if the player has super bunny active:

  • Doing a rupee pull will give full Link state.
  • If Link gets bunny beamed with super bunny active, Link will transform to his default state when the bunny beam effect wears off.
  • Unbunny beam

Unbunny beam

The unbunny beam glitch occurs when the player absorbs a bunny beam and exits the underworld before the bunny beam's effect timer has counted all the way down. When this occurs, the player will effectively have a stored "unbunny." If the player follows this up with using an entrance super bunny glitch (so for example, mirroring while using an underworld entrance), the stored unbunny will happen, giving a full Link state.

Wallmaster

If bunny Link is grabbed by a wallmaster, he'll gain full Link state. This is most useful in Skull Woods, which has a few quick and easy to access wallmasters.

Water bunny revival

Using a bottled fairy, bunny Link can be revived as normal Link if he dies over deep water. This is easiest to do if the player also has the flippers as they'll be able to surf out over deep water and take damage freely. If the player doesn't have flippers, they'll have to time jumping into the deep water and getting hit while Link is out over it.

Bunny pocket

Bunny pocket is a glitch where the player can perform a one time Y-item use while in bunny state. The bunny normally only lets the player use three items (bottles, mirror, and book). Bunny pocket lets the player store a single use of any of the following items:

  • Bow
  • Cane of byrna
  • Cane of somaria
  • Fire rod
  • Hammer; bunny pocket hammer can be used on hammer pegs or pots but not to deal damage to enemies
  • Ice rod
  • Magic powder
  • Shovel

There are a few ways to activate this glitch.

  1. Item dash: After obtaining a Link state in the underworld (i.e., through dungeon revival), do an item dash out of an overworld entrance using one of the bunny pocket items.
  2. Walking exit: After obtaining a Link state in the underworld (same as above), use one of the bunny pocket items and immediately exit to the overworld. If the Y-item's animation is long enough (for example, the shovel animation) and/or the player exits quickly enough, bunny pocket will be armed.
  3. Lonk state: Get a full Link state in the overworld (i.e., through super bunny rupee pull), and then recoil Link into an underworld entrance to apply Lonk state. While in the underworld, use one of the bunny pocket items while going up a spiral staircase. Note that Lonk can move while using items that would normally lock Link into a short animation.

After arming the glitch, the player needs to switch to either the mirror or a bottle. After pressing Y with either of those equipped, Link will use the item he has stored. If the player is executing this with the cane of bynra, they'll need to quickly re-equip byrna after activating the glitch with mirror/bottle equipped.

Bunny pocket will be disarmed if the player takes damage.
