Cane of Byrna

The cane of byrna, frequently shortened to byrna, is a Y-item that grants Link invulnerability at the cost of magic.

Location

Cane of byrna is found in a chest in the spike cave on Dark Death Mountain. This cave is accessed by jumping the ledge just south of Link after using the portal on Death Mountain. To travel the cave and reach the chest, Link needs the hammer, a lift upgrade, and the ability to survive the spike floor. Surviving the spike floor requires one of the following:

• A minimum of 14 full hearts
• A way to mitigate damage taken (mail upgrades or cape).
• Some way to replenish lost hearts (such as a bottled potion or fairy).

Description

The cane of byrna will make Link completely invulnerable to damage at the cost of magic. The magical ring that circles around Link after byrna has been cast can also damage some enemies or potentially lag the game in busier rooms.

When Link first casts byrna, 16 MP will immediately be used (or 8 MP if Link has the half magic upgrade). From there, 64 frames pass before byrna sets into a pattern of using 4 MP per 24 frames. This makes byrna more efficient with magic consumption than the magic cape, which plays a similar role.

Byrna can be used with an item dash. It will be cast immediately, and Link will be invulnerable to damage during his dash.
